BREAK AWAY

OVERVIEW

“Break Away” is inspired by the traditional Chinese running horse lantern and Western zoetrope, both of which impart the characteristics of motion to stationary objects. This project uses the same principles to explore the relationship between 3D printed artwork and animation. In order to better respond to Rococo's design theme, we extracted the original shape of the pattern from the paintings at the time and established the 3D model. The overall model is roughly divided into two parts: the outer decorative frame and the pattern of growth inside. The modified frame can also grow and sway along with the intermediate pattern at high speeds. By using cameras and lights, it is not only a static handicrafts, but also a vibrant video installation and animation.

DESGIN INSPIRATION

     Fig3. Running Horse Lantern

Chinese running house lantern is a part of the most popular toys and lanterns which show a horse running projection on the screen. The basic working principle (as it shows in Fig.3) is to use candles to heat the air and make the paper-cut image on the axle to move. The interesting thing is that similar device called zoetrope (as it shows in Fig.2) had also been invented in other countries in the world. Zoetrope is a bowl decorated with a series of images that can create motion illusion when it rotates. The similarity is that both of running horse lantern and zoetrope were let static artifacts to be dynamic and attractive. In order to better adjust to the development of innovative technology and aesthetics, we used Chinese running horse lantern as the basic framework and 3D zoetrope as the engine to trigger a series of animation.

SHOWCASE

Rococo Zoetrope combines the distinctive areas of culture and properly utilizes Eastern and Western elements. Rocco fashion is well known for its superb craftsmanship which is different from the parametric design and mass production today. It’s not only for machine production. It’s more about the attitude towards traditional handicrafts. We should make full use of science and technology to enhance the efficiency of handicrafts production because it will open a new era for different culture and media.
