STRANGE MANKIND

OVERVIEW

This is an experiment about exploring human behavior, more specifically, it is to observe whether people will change their behavior because of environmental changes. We choose the campus of the Zurich University of the Arts as an experimental site. The whole experiment is divided into two parts: one is the physical barriers set on the entrance stairs of the campus that everyone must pass. The other one is the soft obstacles in campus with different gender zone. We use cameras to record the process of people’s reaction, and the result is open and interesting.

DESIGN PROCESS

We made a mark on two different stairs in the school and expected to see how people react to it later. On the stairs outside the school, the stripe was tied with a  strange Z shape, deliberately giving way to people to take a detour. On the stairs in the school, the stairs were divided into three blocks: male, female and something in between.

CONCLUSION

For the experiments outside the school, most people will follow the path we designed, and some people will damage our straps and follow their own ideas. Moreover, there are several kids tried to bowl their body down to get through the barriers. The participants created their own way to play the game.

For the experiments inside the school, most people did not respond specifically to the stairs in the school. The reason may be that soft obstacles do not have a practical impact on people walking. Secondly, the gender division is relatively private. But if we put this privacy zone in public, it will lose the privacy attribute.
